Canada’s post-secondary institutions develop highly qualified people, perform world-leading research, and generate breakthrough ideas. As we drive towards a more connected, digitally enhanced society, these institutions play a key role in developing training and skills for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedDev Ontario, joined Members of Parliament Ruby Sahota (Brampton North), Sonia Sidhu (Brampton South), Kamal Khera (Brampton West), and Ramesh Sangha (Brampton Centre), to announce that FedDev Ontario is investing $10 million in Ryerson University’s Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst. This investment will support a new national centre for innovation and collaboration in cybersecurity, located in downtown Brampton.
Working in close partnership with governments and industry partners, the Catalyst will offer specialized training programs to address the high demand for skilled workers in the growing cybersecurity sector. In addition, the program will establish over 40 partnerships, and bring together researchers and industry to develop innovative solutions to protect Canadians from cyber threats. This investment will also support the creation of a unique small business accelerator to grow Canadian cybersecurity firms, and will ultimately assist 60 companies to commercialize new products and enter new markets.
Over 790 skilled jobs will be created and maintained—including 600 industry job placements through training and certification; 180 jobs through commercial business acceleration; and, 13 jobs for project management and delivery at the Catalyst.
In addition to the investment by FedDev Ontario, Rogers Communications Inc., the Royal Bank of Canada and the City of Brampton will also make major investments, totalling $20 million, to advance the mission of the new hub.
“Since being elected in 2015, the focus of our Federal Liberal Government and the focus of your Brampton MPs has been to grow the economy, support middle-class families and help create high paying jobs right here in Brampton,” said MP Sahota. “This investment by our Government is another example of this commitment – the Catalyst establishes a national centre of innovation and collaboration in cybersecurity right here in Brampton, which will create hundreds of jobs and spur the economic development that Brampton needs.”
